This week we made paper maché masks. We did it very different than what we learned in elementary school. The paste we used was made out of plant material. It was goey and clear and had a really weird texture. It took a little bit to get used to the feeling of it. Instead of taking strips of newspaper and dipping it into the paste we put the paste on the mask mold, then used paper towels to make the mask. It had to be really wet and sticky. After they dried we painted them. I was out sick on the first couple days so I got a little bit behind. One of my friend brought it home and I was able to paint it white by myself. The next day when I came back to school I started on the eyes and the nose. I outlined them black which is a little hard to see in this picture because it has a black background. Next I did the red around the eyes, and the spider web. It was hard to paint on the mask because it was a perfectly smooth surface. It bugged me because I'm such a perfectionist that my lines weren't consistent in thickness. The mouth came next and I wasn't planing on making it just a rectangle but once I started it I didn't like the way it was turning out. I think the rectangle works because it balances out the details on the top with something simple on the bottom. The dots were next. Is tarted around the eyes, and then the nose and then the mouth. I really like the way it turned out especially after putting the gloss cover on top of it. One thing I would change would be I think I would put the gloss on the eyes the spiderweb and the mouth and then the matter cover on the rest of it just to give it some contrast. We put them up on display in the school library. |

This is the finished project! I really like it :) I was really pleased when I measure it after and it was centered because i forgot to do that before I started drawing. I will describe my process below. This project had a little bit more freedom then our other projects so far. The only requirement was that there were 2 hands in the finished product. I wanted to experiment a little more with watercolors so I did. One of my class mates mentioned that the top of it looks like a heart as well. I put tape on the edges to give it a border which is still on in this picture. It ended up ripping a little bit of the paint off which I had to fix. I spent 2 days working on this and I think I should have just left it the way it was at the end of the first day. I don't like how some places are splotchy and have hard lines, at the end of the first day it was more of a blended color.
