This week we made paper maché masks. We did it very different than what we learned in elementary school. The paste we used was made out of plant material. It was goey and clear and had a really weird texture. It took a little bit to get used to the feeling of it. Instead of taking strips of newspaper and dipping it into the paste we put the paste on the mask mold, then used paper towels to make the mask. It had to be really wet and sticky. After they dried we painted them. I was out sick on the first couple days so I got a little bit behind. One of my friend brought it home and I was able to paint it white by myself. The next day when I came back to school I started on the eyes and the nose. I outlined them black which is a little hard to see in this picture because it has a black background. Next I did the red around the eyes, and the spider web. It was hard to paint on the mask because it was a perfectly smooth surface. It bugged me because I'm such a perfectionist that my lines weren't consistent in thickness. The mouth came next and I wasn't planing on making it just a rectangle but once I started it I didn't like the way it was turning out. I think the rectangle works because it balances out the details on the top with something simple on the bottom. The dots were next. Is tarted around the eyes, and then the nose and then the mouth. I really like the way it turned out especially after putting the gloss cover on top of it. One thing I would change would be I think I would put the gloss on the eyes the spiderweb and the mouth and then the matter cover on the rest of it just to give it some contrast. We put them up on display in the school library. |
